Paso Robles, Calif. Delta Liquid Energy (DLE), California's Leading Provider of Propane Autogas, commends the US Congress for the introduction of the Propane Green Autogas Solutions Act (Propane GAS Act) of 2011 introduced by Representatives, Dan Boren and Mike Rogers, and Senators, Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Debbie Stabenow. This act serves to extend existing tax credits for the purchase of propane autogas, propane autogas-enabled vehicles, and the purchase and installation of propane autogas refueling infrastructure that were established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT 2005) and the 2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) legislation.
Ben Cardin, the Senator for Maryland, has stated that, “The Propane Green Autogas Solutions Act offers the long-term policy commitment necessary to continue building essential alternative fuel infrastructure and bolster a burgeoning autogas market. Private investment is much more likely to occur when the availability of the tax credits is assured in the long-term so the propane industry can create the economies of scale necessary to make propane autogas a viable and competitive alternative fuel.”
In first introducing the bill Cardin had also noted that, “The best way for the United States to put downward pressure on gasoline and diesel prices is through demand reduction since we are the world’s biggest consumers of petroleum products by far. The Propane Green Autogas Solutions Act offers one way to reduce our demand – by substituting propane for gasoline or diesel fuel. Propane is a domestic transportation fuel. It’s less expensive than gasoline and diesel fuel. It burns more cleanly.”
Propane is one of the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels, listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992. Vehicles fueled by propane produce 30-90% less carbon monoxide and about 50% fewer toxins and other smog-producing emissions than gasoline engines. Propane is the only alternative fuel with fueling stations located in every state. In addition, nearly 97% of propane consumed in the United States is domestically produced.
